ForeScout Technologies has launched ForeScout Mobile – plug-in modules for Android and iOS which allow enterprises to keep control as a plethora of devices access corporate resources in the BYOD era.

ForeScout’s access control technology is device agnostic, but with the addition of the Mobile Security Module the company adds more extensive features for Android and iOS.

ForeScout can collect hardware, software and configuration information for each iPhone or Android-based smartphone and reports the data to a central appliance. It can see whether a device has been jailbroken, or doesn’t use password protection. That then allows the IT department to determine the security level on each device, and block or limit network access based on device type, device ownership, time of day, and device compliance, according to ForeScout.

The IT department can also take actions to protect enterprise resources. For example, the camera on an iPhone can be turned off when the user is in the office.

The ForeScout Mobile Security Module for Android consists of a plug-in and an app, while the module for the iPhone and iPad natively supports iOS devices, by using the Apple Mobile Device Management API (application programming interface) and the Apple Push Notification service, according to ForeScout.

Choosing to focus on Apple’s iPhone and iPad along with Android-based devices was a “no-brainer,” according to Hanan Levin, vice president of product management at ForeScout, whose biggest wish is that the same APIs could be used on both OSes.

Today, Apple’s APIs work well, but you can’t do anything outside of what they support, Levin said. On Android, “the sky is the limit”, but you have to do all the work yourself and integrate with OS, Levin added.

The company has also launched the Mobile MDM Module, a product that can integrate with existing management platforms and adds more access control features.

ForeScout Mobile costs from $2,800 (around £1,785) for 100 devices. The ForeScout Mobile Security Module for Android and iOS are in beta test and will be available in April. The ForeScout Mobile MDM Module will start shipping in the third quarter.

McAfee has released their quarterly threat report for the fourth quarter of 2011, and some of the results may surprise you. The report examines the biggest threats to online security for both the fourth quarter and all of 2011. The report shows that while spam email seems to be on the decline, malware remains a significant threat.

While malware remains a significant problem on computers – PCs far moreso than Macs – the biggest area of growth for malware has turned out to be mobile. Google’s Android platform is increasingly the target of malware. According to the report, mobile malware and adware were at an all-time high in 2011 in general, and in the fourth quarter in particular. Most Android malware hijacks users’ phones and uses them to send SMS messages. The ease with with an Android device can be rooted makes the problem worse, as the same exploits rooters use to hack the operating system to increase their ability to customize it can also be used by attackers to hijack the phones.

Meanwhile, malware growth on PCs appears to have declined in the fourth quarter. Yet the study warns that there were still over 75 million unique malware samples recorded, meaning that users cannot afford to relax their vigilance. Macs remain the most secure platform. Despite a spike in June, the malware threat on Mac computers remains all but nonexistent. Nevertheless, the report reminds users that “it’s always wise to protect your system, even if it’s a MacBook Air.”

Perhaps the best news to come out of the report involves spam. While spam email messages still vastly outnumber legitimate email messages, the gap appears to be closing. While some countries – including the United States – experienced slight increases in spam volume, overall volume was the lowest it’s been in years. The report cautions, though, that the threats represented by spam email remain as strong as ever, and perhaps even stronger. While volume has certainly decreased, the report notes that address lists for spambots have become more accurate and more precisely targeted.

The full report, which includes a more detailed breakdown of threats and a country-by-country breakdown of spam rates, can be found in PDF form here. Another interesting detail tucked away in the report’s discussion of malware is that the majority of malicious sites are actually hosted in the United States.

Have you noticed a decline in the amount of spam you’ve been getting? If you’re an Android user, have you had an problems with malware? Let us know in the comments?

Manage the software and security updates you need to deploy to the servers, desktop, and mobile systems in your organization. For more information see the TechNet Update Management Center. The Microsoft TechNet Security website provides additional information about security in Microsoft products.

Security updates are available from Microsoft Update and Windows Update. Security updates are also available from the Microsoft Download Center. You can find them most easily by doing a keyword search for “security update.”

Finally, security updates can be downloaded from the Microsoft Update Catalog. The Microsoft Update Catalog provides a searchable catalog of content made available through Windows Update and Microsoft Update, including security updates, drivers and service packs. By searching using the security bulletin number (such as, “MS07-036″), you can add all of the applicable updates to your basket (including different languages for an update), and download to the folder of your choosing. For more information about the Microsoft Update Catalog, see the Microsoft Update Catalog FAQ.

Detection and Deployment Guidance

Phoenix, AZ (PRWEB) February 22, 2012

ZookaWare releases tips on how to identify a spyware or adware problem on PCs. Quick detection is important when dealing with any type of malware, as the malware itself and the problems it is creating tend to multiply at an alarming rate.

Tips on Identifying a Spyware or Adware Problem on PCs:

1. Difficulty with program function when multiple windows are open

2. Internet surfing has slowed down

3. Excessive pop up windows

4. Pop up windows on unrelated topics/services

5. Periodically press CTL+ALT+DELETE. This will bring up the Task Manager. Click on Processes. Look each of the processes up on the internet. Don’t trust all the info that pops up in a general search, but use what you find to attempt to determine if processes currently running on your computer may have malicious intent.

6. Open a command window (DOS box) by clicking Start – Run – cmd. Type in the following command: netstat – an . This will show you a list of the systems you are connected to, those connected to you and any listening ports (You can find common port numbers online, but 80 and 443 typically refer to the web and 135, 139, and 445 are typically referencing Microsoft networks).

Clint Ethington of ZookaWare said, “The sad fact is that almost any user who frequently accesses the Internet is probably going to have an adware or spyware issue on their computer. Many experts recommend running a good spyware removal program regularly, regardless of the presence of common symptoms or blatant issues indicating a problem.”

ZookaWare has been offering high quality PC solutions and excellent tech support since 2004. Our products are designed specifically for the average PC user. At ZookaWare they call it ‘designing software for people, not geeks.’ The ZookaWare product suite includes: CyberBackup, RegZooka, and SpyZooka. CyberBackup provides a safety net for users by protecting their data through remote storage. RegZooka offers PC error solutions through registry cleaning. SpyZooka finds and removes spyware from PCs and also acts as a preventive measure, keeping spyware from infecting the computer. The ZookaWare suite of products was designed to work together to provide the average user with all the protection they need for their PC.
