The Town of Hampstead posted an advisory urging residents to prevent and report instances of identity theft and identity fraud. The advisory comes after town public security officers alerted Montreal police to a case of alleged identity theft. On Oct. 28, the officers saw an 18-year-old man who was loitering intentionally drop what turned out to be a false permit with a Hampstead address. Councillor Harvey Shafer said the 18-year-old man allegedly belonged to a street gang specializing in credit card theft and fraud. “These individuals steal credit cards, order merchandise online and give a fictitious address to pick up the orders,” Shaffer recently read in the November public security report. The councillor also pointed out at the time that incidents of fraud, thefts and personification are numerous in the town. The RCMP advisory posted by Hampstead says that if individuals believe or know they are a victim of identity theft or fraud, or may have unintentionally provided personal or financial information: • “Contact your local police force and file a report.” • “Contact your bank/financial institution and credit card company.” • “Contact the two national credit bureaus and place a fraud alert on your credit reports.
