MISSISSAUGA – Peel Regional Police say they are adding a second four-day Cyber Academy seminar after the first drew record numbers of residents looking for tips to increase their safety online. The Cyber Academy – part of the force’s Crime Prevention Academy initiative – is a public seminar running one night a week over a four-week stretch and is designed to teach participants tips and tricks to help avoiding becoming victims of criminals operating in cyberspace. More than 40 spots are available per session and the courses are taught at the Emil V. Kolb Centre for Police Excellence. “(The Cyber Academy) actually started six years ago when we started seeing an increase in crimes being run on the internet,” said Const. Yvette Logan of the crime prevention services unit. “Nowadays, pretty much any crime can be run on the internet.” “We run different academies out of this facility that deal with personal safety, home safety and things like that, but we thought we needed to isolate it and run a program that deals strictly with technology crimes and what’s happening on the internet,” she added.
