The City of New York has announced plans to adopt an innovative anti-gun violence device, The ShotSpotter, which aims to slow the increase in gun crime in New York City. ShotSpotter is made up of acoustic sensors that detects the sound of gunfire. The sensors are attached to cameras on buildings throughout New York. When a gunshot is fired, cameras will review video footage to see where the gunfire was from in order to solve the crime. The devices cost $1.5 million and will be part of a year-long test program.The ShotSpotters have been implemented in the Bronx and 300 more cameras will be installed across New York City. Mayor Bill de Blasio says the devices will deter crime. “What you get with ShotSpotter is real-time information so the police can respond so much faster,” said de Blasio. “The audio senses detect gunfire, pinpoint the shots to literally, within feet of where they have occurred and that gives the police the ability to get to the scene,” said the mayor. “This new gunshot deterrent system is going to do a whole lot of good in terms of going after the bad guys.” “This technology will help us stay even safer,” added de Blasio.
