US General says : North Korean hackers among world’s best

hackers

North Korea’s asymmetric warfare potential is being bolstered by one of the world’s best and most organised cyber attack capabilities, according to the Army general nominated to command United States forces in South Korea.
“This is an area of growth,” Army General Vincent Brooks told the Senate Armed Services Committee during his nomination hearing on Tuesday. “While I would not characterise them as the best in the world, they are among the best in the world and the best organised. What they are experimenting with” and “what they are willing to do” has shown boldness and capability, he added.
Although Brooks, the former head of Army Pacific forces, touched on North Korea’s cyber attack skills, he declined during the public hearing to discuss US offensive cyber capabilities against Kim Jong-un ‘s reclusive regime.
FBI Director James Comey said in early 2015 that his agency had “high confidence” that North Korea orchestrated a 2014 attack against Sony that led to the leak of information on the company’s employees, internal e-mails and future movies. North Korea’s Reconnaissance General Bureau was behind that hack, James Clapper, US director of national intelligence, also said in 2015. North Korea rejected the accusations.

B.C. government systems vulnerable to hacking: Auditor General

Many British Columbia government organizations lack a strong enough line of defence against hacking, system threats and disruption, according to the province’s auditor general. Carol Bellringer released a new report Tuesday examining general computing controls, or the policies and practices that protect government information technology systems from threats. “We can’t stress enough the importance of these controls,” she told reporters. “Without strong general computing controls, government risks loss of public trust in its ability to safeguard our most sensitive data and ensuring critical services are always up and running.” General computing controls include restraints on who can access systems, how to make changes to systems and backup and recovery of systems. Bellringer asked all 148 government organizations, including ministries, health authorities and colleges, to rate their general computing controls and audited 13 of those self-assessments. Many organizations assessed themselves at a higher level than in a previous report in 2013. But of the 13 organizations she audited, 69 per cent over-rated their level of achievement. “They didn’t have sufficient evidence to support their self-assessments. Many of them didn’t have documented policies and procedures, which are the foundation of strong general computing controls,” she said. Bellringer recommended that organizations review their […]

Attorney General DeWine Offers Five Tips to Avoid Scams While Shopping Online

As consumers shop online during Cyber Monday and throughout the holiday season, Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine is encouraging them to protect their personal information and avoid scams online. “It’s a busy time of year, but it’s important not to let your guard down when it comes to identity theft and fraud prevention,” Attorney General DeWine said. “We encourage people to check out the websites they’re using before entering payment information, to be careful about the type of payment they use when shopping online, and to watch for signs of a scam.” The Monday after Thanksgiving, known as Cyber Monday, is considered one of the biggest online shopping days of the year, and according to survey results from the National Retail Federation, almost half of holiday shopping (browsing and buying) will occur online this year. To avoid scams while shopping online, Attorney General DeWine offers consumers the following recommendations: Install updates on your devices before shopping. Installing updates on your phone, tablet, computer, or other electronic devices can add new security patches and critical files, so make sure your apps, anti-virus software, operating systems, and other important programs are up to date before entering payment information. Remember to download or […]

Penn man a suspected child predator, Pennsylvania attorney general says

A Berks County man is one of four people identified by the Pennsylvania attorney general on Thursday as being suspected child predators. Brandon Michael Batz was found to have multiple images of suspected child pornography on electronic devices that were seized from his home in Penn Township, near Bernville, officials said. The discovery was made after a computer registered to Batz was found on a peer-to-peer network sharing media files believed to depict child porn, officials said.

Batz, 30, was charged with one count of distribution of child pornography, 21 counts of possession of child pornography and one count of criminal use of a communication facility.
