Hackers strike UK National Crime Agency

Source: National Cyber Security – Produced By Gregory Evans

The NCA is a national agency responsible for combating organized crime and cybercrime. The hackers used a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack on the NCA. DDoS attacks prompt Web sites to shut down by overloading them with fake traffic. “DDoS is a blunt form of attack which takes volume and not skill,” the agency told The Guardian. “It isn’t a security breach, and it doesn’t affect our operational capability.” Shortly after the NCA site was shut down, the hacking group Lizard Squad tweeted an allusion to the code used to launch the attack and the text “nationalcrimeagency.gov.uk/  #offline.” Last week, four U.K. teens were released on bail on charges of launching cyberattacks using a tool made by Lizard Squad. The teens allegedly used the “Lizard Stresser” to attack a national newspaper, a school, gaming companies and several online retailers. The same tool was apparently used in the attack on the NCA. The arrests were part of a larger raid intended to identify individuals linked to Lizard Squad. According to Ars Technica, the hacking group’s website is still online as of yesterday, although the Lizard Stresser tool was not available. Chinese hack of US national security details revealed days after Russian hack

Source: National Cyber Security – Produced By Gregory Evans

The ongoing saga of successful foreign hack attacks on government databases continued Monday with news of another break-in allegedly perpetrated by China. Just days after the reported spear-phishing attack on the Pentagon’s joint staff email system, which exposed some 4,000 civilian and military employees and is believed to have been sponsored by Russia, anonymous government sources told NBC News that a separate set of Chinese hack attacks targeted the personal emails of “all top national security and trade officials”. These attacks – among the more than 600 hacks attributed by officials to hackers working for the Chinese government – sought personal email info from top administration officials and began in 2010. NBC’s source said the hacks were still going on but would not name any of the officials targeted. The US government is dealing with several different investigations into breaches, of security, the largest of which is the hack of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) – an intrusion that exposed the personal information of some 22 million people. That investigation has been troubled by intramural squabbling by the agency’s own admission: Patrick McFarland, the office’s inspector general, wrote a strongly worded memo to acting OPM director Beth Cobert accusing […]

Antrix website hack: Cyber security should become national priority, says Pawan Duggal

Source: National Cyber Security – Produced By Gregory Evans

Hours after the website of Antrix, Indian Space Research Organisation’s commercial arm, was hacked, cyber law expert Pawan Duggal on Sunday said that cyber security should become a national priority. Hours after the website of Antrix, Indian Space Research Organisation’s commercial arm, was hacked, cyber law expert Pawan Duggal on Sunday said that cyber security should become a national priority. “This is not a normal hack. This has to be seen as a broader cyber war activities that are targeted against India..We have seen large number of attacks coming up on government websites. Who is behind this, we will have to wait and watch,” Duggal told ANI. “This should be enough to wake us up from complacency, we need to quickly realize that cyber security has to be number one national priority. Unfortunately, that is not the case. India still does not have dedicated legislation on cyber security, we have a very weak cyber law,” he added. Earlier in the day, the website of Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) commercial arm Antrix was hacked. The PRO of ISRO confirmed the same and said that there is some problem with the homepage of the Antrix website. Antrix Corporation Limited is the […]

National Center for Civil and Human Rights opens in Atlanta

On Monday, June 23, 2014 the National Center for Civil and Human Rights will open in the city of Atlanta. It will provide the city with a place to visit that offers history of the Civil Rights Eras in America.

This gallery was designed by George C. Wolfe, a Tony Award-winning playwright and director, best-known for directing Bring in ‘da Noise/Bring in ‘da Funk and Angels in America —Millennium Approaches. This is his first museum —not including the fictional attraction in his 1986 play The Colored Museum.

Exhibit designer Jill Savitt said her goal is to “put the ‘human’ in human rights,” and thus the room is full of people with whom the visitors can see eye to eye as they explore the exhibition.

Atlanta Free Speech would like to encourage adults and parents to visit the center. Bring your children, nieces, nephews, and cousins on this great educational journey.  Hopefully, this exhibition will force discussions on how those very systems of oppressions being explored through pictures, videos, artwork and artifacts still impact the lives of Blacks and other people of color today.

The National Center for Civil and Human Rights at a glance:

Cost: $75 million

Size: 42,000 square feet

Parking: Georgia Aquarium or World of Coke.

Permanent collections: In addition to exhibition rights for the King papers, which are actually owned by Morehouse College, the center has seven portraits of human rights “heroes” by Atlanta painter Ross Rossin; a series of paintings of U.S. Representative John Lewis by folk artist Benny Andrews; “Without Sanctuary,” disturbing images of lynchings in America (many of them on postcards) collected by James Allen.

Programs: One of the first programs presented at the center will be on human trafficking in Atlanta, presented by the Women’s Solidarity Initiative, a group of local leaders.

Visiting the Center

Starting June 23rd, the National Center for Civil and Human Rights will be open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. seven days a week. Tickets: $15; senior/student/educator, $13; children (3-12), $10; 2 and under, free; military (active and retired), free; military family: adult, $7.50; senior, $6.50; youth, $5.
