Meet CyberBerkut, The Pro-Russian Hackers Waging Anonymous-Style Cyberwarfare Against Ukraine

Ukraine is under cyberattack. A small, roving group of hackers called CyberBerkut is trying to humiliate the pro-Western government in Kiev by leaking details on everything from government officials’ personal lives to international arms deals. But, even scarier, CyberBerkut is using methods that pale in comparison to the much larger, more sophisticated digital cannon that can be traced straight back to the Kremlin. CyberBerkut is a pro-Moscow hacking collective that has breached Ukrainian government and military networks and launched distributed denial-of-service attacks against Western targets, all in an attempt to embarrass Ukraine while conveniently boosting the hackers’ own profile. This week the group leaked documents to Russian media that seem to prove a Ukrainian state-owned defense company is planning to sell fragmentation bombs to Qatar. Last month Russian media alsopublished documents (provided by CyberBerkut) insinuating that Ukraine sold surface-to-air missiles to Qatar and, ultimately, the Islamic State group (a favorite claim of Russian and Iranian state media). It’s all part of a propaganda campaign starring Russia’s own version of Anonymous. The group, made up of at least four people who came together in 2014, is the most visible example of a proxy hacking collective launching strikes against Ukraine — with at […]

Ukraine left battered by cyber war as hackers target election

The night before, a shadowy pro-Moscow hacking collective called CyberBerkut attacked the premises. Its stated goal: to cripple the online system for distributing results and voter turnout throughout election day.SOFTWARE was destroyed. Hard drives were fried. Router settings were undone. Even the main backup was ruined. The carnage stunnedCOMPUTER specialists the next morning. “It was like taking a cold shower,” said Victor Zhora, director of the Ukrainian IT firm Infosafe, which helped set up the network for the elections. “It really was the first strike in the cyber war.” In just 72 hours, Ukraine would head to the polls in an election crucial to cementing the legitimacy of a new pro-Western government, desperate for a mandate as war exploded in the country’s east. If the commission didn’t offer its usual real-time online results, doubts about the vote’s legitimacy would further fracture an already divided nation. The attack ultimately failed to derail the vote. Ukrainian computer specialists mobilised toRESTORE operations in time for the elections. But the intrusion heralded a new era in Ukraine that showed how geopolitical confrontation with Russia could give rise to a nebulous new cabal of cyber foes, bent on undermining and embarrassing authorities trying to break […]

Ukraine tensions could hurt international security efforts, Kaspersky says

Source: National Cyber Security – Produced By Gregory Evans

As governments all around the world are finding a peaceful solution for the political tension in Ukraine , the cyber-criminals could catch government with online attacks , warned Kaspersky Lab CEO Eugene Kaspersky. “It is good news for the local IT projects, but the international projects will have less budgeted,” says Kaspersky. “When the governments don’t talk to each other and cooperate, that damages traditional industry and economies, but also cyberspace”  They added. “It will damage global Internet projects,” he said. “Nations will be more focused on the national projects. That’s good news for the local IT companies, but … the evolution of cyberspace will slow down.” They continued. Anything that decreases trust among government can hurt such efforts, Kaspersky said.
