A budget of more than £204 million for West Mercia Police has been approved for 2015/16 by the police and crime panel, which will accompany an increase in its council tax precept. The force – which needs to save about £30 million from its budget by 2020 – covers Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin as well as Herefordshire and Worcestershire. The financial proposals from Police and Crime Commissioner Bill Longmore were scrutinised and passed by the panel – which replaced police authorities – at a meeting this week. The total figure is almost £1 million lower than the 2014/15, despite the force’s Government grant next year is being reduced by almost £6 million. West Mercia bosses say reserves and the 1.99 per cent increase in the force’s portion of ratepayers’ council tax bills offset the Government reduction and bring the budget back up.he force’s share of council tax will increase from April, meaning the burden for someone at an average band D home, will increase by 1p a day – or £3.65 over the course of the whole year. r Longmore said the extra money will be used on programmes to prevent and reduce crime, such as early intervention, offender […]
