Tulane: Payroll information swiped

NEW ORLEANS (AP) – Tulane University says a laptop computer containing payroll and Social Security information for all university employees has been stolen.

Tulane spokesman Mike Strecker told a New Orleans newspaper the computer was inside a briefcase in the locked car of an employee.

The employee had been outside the city and was processing tax records during the holiday break. The theft occurred on Dec. 19. Strecker declined to say where the theft occurred.

Strecker says each of Tulane’s 10,684 employees has received a letter describing the crime and offering a year’s free credit monitoring of their accounts. The university is the city’s largest private employer.
