How your Facebook profile exposes your identity

Information you share on social media can be revealing. But did you know something as simple as your pets name could open the door to identity theft?

Millions of us love to share photos, details and events going on in our lives with people we love, like or sometimes barely know.
You may think you’re revealing harmless details about your life but you could be giving hackers the key to your identity.

Despite the warnings on privacy settings, according to a new survey
25 million Americans leave their Facebook profiles wide open to the public.

Posting your birth place, pet’s name or you email address can be devastating to your identity.

“If somebody wants to get into your bank account and you happen to use Fluffy but all over your Facebook (page) you have pictures of your new dog fluffy.”

Certified ethical hacker, Charles Tendell, Chief Technology Officer for Forensic Pursuit says one out of every 10 profiles will get attacked. A hackers first weapon is finding your password.

“Nowadays, people use their mom’s maiden name the name of their dog, a combination of their birth date and their address,” says Tendell.

Your profile can reveal key pieces of personal information.

“A smart hacker can use that information and just steal your life away,” he adds.

The Facebook Safety Survival Guide has a few tools of self defense.

Never post your exact date and place of birth.

Never post your address, phone number or email address.

Control who can see your personal information

And limit information about your activities, especially if and when you leave town.

“Don’t share everything to the world if you don’t want the entire world to see what you’ve got.” Tendell says.
