More than four out of five Australian families apparently worry about malware and data security. So why aren’t the rest of us bothered?

According to in-home technical services provider gizmo, 86% of Australian families are concerned about being infected by viruses and spyware.

The figure comes from a survey conducted for the company in June 2010. There were 1025 respondents.

It would be interesting to know why the other 14% weren’t worried. Perhaps that group is made up of Windows users who trust their chosen security software vendor to do a good job so they don’t need to worry any more, plus those using operating systems such as Linux and Mac OS X that are far less prone to malware than Windows. Or maybe they just don’t have home computers.

gizmo CEO Ben Ashton said “Internet security is a big issue for families. This is the first thing we check on every customer’s PC, and we recommend internet security as a core component of every home set-up we do.”

In addition, 81% of respondents said data security was a major concern when storing information on their PCs.
