As summer approaches, many families are preparing for trips, summer camps, and various fun activities. These families are fortunate to ensure their kids are kept occupied and engaged during this time of year. But what about the families who are not as fortunate? What is not generally discussed is the number of children who go without meals during the summer months due to the closing of school. Many children rely on school meals as their primary means to sustain themselves due to family hardships. The USDA Summer Food Service Program has addressed this need through various partnerships and community programs.
Several non-profit organizations within metro Atlanta provide free breakfast and lunch throughout the summer to children up to 18 years of age. The below organizations will begin serving meals starting Monday, June 1st through the end of July. These organizations are dedicated to serving children within the community and ensuring healthy meals are provided. For more information about the SFSP, please click here.
