What started as a routine traffic stop for an uninspected car ended with two men being charged with credit card fraud. Herbert Bax, 29, was pulled over by Port Authority police Thursday evening at Manila Avenue and 14th Street because his Nissan sedan was overdue for inspection and it had false license plates, a police report said. Police also found that Bax had an outstanding warrant out of Westhampton for $195 and was arrested, the report said. It was when the vehicle was impounded that the charges got more serious for the driver and passenger. Police found 14 credit cards and 20 gift cards that had been tampered with in the vehicle, the report said. Officers then interviewed Bax and Renold Egalite, 29, of Brooklyn — who had gone to the Holland Tunnel station to post bail for Bax — and they admitted the credit cards were fraudulent, the report said. Both men were charged with falsifying business records, related to the gift and credit cards; and tampering with public records related to the license plates, police said.
