This past summer, Google pulled a maneuver that caught pretty much everyone by surprise, creating a holding company to oversee all the different businesses the enterprise found itself pursuing.
While it does not substantially change what Google and the other business units are doing, it makes it easier for the company as a whole to explore new ideas without perceptions that the cornerstones (search, Android, YouTube, ads) were being neglected.
