“Ice Bucket Challenge” Helps Lead to ALS Breakthrough

Two years ago, everyone was drenching themselves in ice water thanks to the “ice bucket challenge.” This viral charity effort ended up raising $220 million for research into fighting ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. The bump in funding has led to breakthroughs in the fight against ALS. Over the past two years, scientists have identified three different genes that are responsible for causing the disease, giving them hope of developing effective therapies. ALS affects the body’s nerves and muscles, eventually leading to death.
