Lauren Anderson began to study ballet at the age of seven and landed a role with the Houston Ballet’s production of the Nut Cracker that same year. Her competitive spirit and graceful techniques landed her a spot in the company in 1983. In 1990, Lauren became the first female African American principal dancer and prima ballerina heading a major ballet company, when she was promoted to principal dancer with the Houston Ballet.
