NEW YORK (TheStreet) — Online activists are claiming a cyber attack on Bank of America’s (BAC) Web site, but one of the nation’s largest banks is not showing any digital signs of failure.
A Twitter account claiming to be run by Anonymous Operations, often described as “hacktivists,” announced “so the #OperationBOA (Operation Bank of America) begins,” adding that ‘foreclosure is a bitch!’ ”
Several Twitter hash tags — which are phrases that denote common themes on the microblogging site — also are claiming that Bank of America is the focus of the attack, including #payback.
A spokesperson for BofA was not immediately available for comment. Attempts to access the bank’s Web site seemed to be successful, although commenters did report sporadic outages.
Anonymous is the same group of loosely tied online activists that successfully interrupted online services of MasterCard (MA), Visa(V) and PayPal earlier this month, with varying degrees of success. The reason for those attacks was attributed to the payment providers’ decision to cut payments for WikiLeaks.
Last week Bank of America also announced that it would no longer process payments for WikiLeaks.
