LIVERMORE, Calif. — Several people set up a roadblock on a Livermore street and pelted a police officer with chunks of concrete early Friday when he stopped to clear it, sending him to the hospital, police said.
The officer, whose name has not been released, stopped his cruiser just before 2:30 a.m. when he found concrete blocks in the northbound lanes of North P Street under a railroad overpass, police said.
Within moments of climbing out of his car, the officer was pelted with 8-by-14-inch chunks of concrete and 3-inch rocks by three or four people who were waiting on the overpass, said Officer Steve Goard, a police spokesman.
"It wasn’t like they were just dropping them," Goard said. "They were throwing them at the officer. He was in full uniform, his lights were on."
The officer suffered a moderate head injury, Goard said. He was treated at ValleyCare Medical Center and released.
"The officers who arrived said he was pretty out of it when they got there," Goard said.
The rock throwers fled before other officers arrived. No arrests have been made.
Anyone with information is asked to call police at 925 294-7531.
