Charged with selling drugs in a school zone

A local woman has been charged with several felony charges after police say she sold drugs in a school zone to several confidential informants.

Alicia Balcom, 36, of Farmington, was charged with three class A felonies of sale of a controlled substance near a school and a class B felony of possession of a controlled substance with the intent to distribute.

According to a probable cause statement, on Jan. 28 a Missouri State Highway Patrol informant purchased one gram of meth from Balcom for $100 at her home in the 600 block of East Liberty Street, which is within 2,000 feet of St. Paul Lutheran School and St. Joseph’s Catholic School near downtown Farmington.

The report said on Feb. 25 a St. Francois County Sheriff’s Department confidential informant purchased another gram of meth from Balcom for $100 at the same address. Then on March 4, a sheriff’s department confidential informant purchased two grams of meth for $200 from Balcom at the same address.

The report said on March 31 the Mineral Area Drug Task Force received information that Balcom and other individuals were traveling to Ironton to purchase a substantial amount of meth.

The report states surveillance was established on Balcom and the others as they traveled to Ironton and back toward Farmington. While Balcom and her associates were headed back toward Farmington, a state trooper stopped them in the area of Doe Run.

The report showed that during the stop it was discovered Balcom had approximately 7 grams of meth concealed in her bra.

Balcom was housed in the St. Francois County jail on a $200,000 bond.
