SAN ANTONIO — Imagine police being able to know where a gunshot was fired within 30 seconds of pulling the trigger. That could soon be a reality if the City of San Antonio invests in a technology called “ShotSpotter” to try to reduce violence in a high crime area. “People thought I was crazy for moving to the East Side,” explained Dee Smith. Dignowity Hill reminds her of back home in Detroit, and after years of renovations, there’s nowhere else she’d rather be. “It seems like in this corner back here there’s not as much crime here as there is in the other end,” she said. “I feel safe. That siren I hear now, I think that’s from downtown.” She’s president of the neighborhood association, but it’s a neighborhood that’s not without crime. “I was standing out on the back porch and a plainclothes policeman with his weapon drawn with- right next door!” Liz Franklin exclaimed. “They were looking for a drug dealer.” We found nine homicides and 80 robberies within a two-mile radius of the East Point area in the last year.
