WEST UNION — The prosecutor in the child sexual abuse trial of
Ricky Putman called the case one of her most disturbing.
Putman, 43, of Arlington, was convicted Dec. 12 of first-degree
sexual abuse causing serious injury. The victim was a 2-year-old
girl later hospitalized in Iowa City.
On Thursday he was sentenced to life in prison with no
possibility of parole, the mandatory term for a Class A felony.
“After prosecuting for 14 years, this is one of the most heinous
and disturbing cases I’ve ever done,” Assistant Iowa Attorney
General Denise Timmins said. “The defendant showed an absolute lack
of conscious regard for (the victim), for her safety, for her
well-being. There’s really no form of punishment that is harsh
enough to fit this crime.”
Prior to the sentencing, Putman declined an invitation from
Judge John Bauercamper to make a statement.
“I have nothing to say,” he said.
The victim’s family did not attend the sentencing hearing.
Prosecutors said Putman had befriended a couple and their three
children, who lived a few blocks away, not long before the
incident. After a night of drinking at their home in May 2010, he
slept upstairs in a bedroom near the girl’s crib. The victim’s
father testified he saw blood on Putman’s hand and shirt in the
morning.
A deputy who interviewed Putman at his home said he appeared to
have showered and done laundry. Graphic child pornography,
including a video titled “2yo girl getting raped during diaper
change,” was found on Putman’s home computer.
Putman denied touching the victim, and no DNA evidence has
linked him to the crime.
