Elderly people will be one of the main targets of sophisticated networks that hire out their services in the criminal underworld of the future, according to a report from Europol. They will exploit the latest technology and scientific discoveries, including nanotechnology, and concentrate much of their attention on Europe’s ageing population. With a growing divide between the rich and poor, criminals will have little difficulty recruiting willing experts, offering their “crime-as-a-service” business model. EU citizens will also be more likely to be tricked and trafficked to the sex trade in emerging markets or as cheap and slave labour. The grim picture was painted by some of the best minds dealing with crime, both from the police forces of EU countries and academics and experts involved in the policing business. The traditional crime gangs with their strict hierarchy of a godfather-like figure at the top presiding over a series of networks will decline and give way to a virtual criminal underworld made up of individual criminal entrepreneurs.
