Job Description
The DAS Engineer is responsible for infrastructure tasks including provisioning DAS and ISCSI SAN, connectivity issues, hardware and software upgrades to DAS and ISCSI SAN devices as well as storage attached servers, proactive improvements and maintenance to storage devices, day-to-day issues and audits, improving processes and procedures, mentoring storage admins and support teams. The DAS Engineer is also responsible for pre-sales solution design when requested which includes requirements collection and DAS solution design. Keeps informed of emerging technologies. Also responsible for the prioritization and management of the ticket queue, handle multiple projects involving various departments, and tasks assigned. Work with product team to design new DAS product offerings and advanced features on current offerings. Due to the 24X7 operations of the business, must be able to work a flexible work schedule, may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
Responsibility:
– Works appropriate intermediate level infrastructure tasks and tickets.
– Schedules and implements DAS and ISCSI SAN maintenances.
– Works cross-functionally with various departments daily.
– Helps develop and implement standards and finds areas of opportunity for automation and efficiencies for day to day operations.
– Monitors and maintains all DAS infrastructure.
– Escalates technical issues to Level 3 DAS Engineers as necessary.
– Works with vendors to resolve escalated hardware and software issues.
– Designs small-medium solutions as required and communicate those solutions to customers.
– Develops documentation to improve processes, procedures, customer experience, etc. of environments.
– Ensures completeness and compatibility of each DAS device as well as DAS back-end infrastructure on a case by case basis to support system stability and performance.
– Looks at the big picture to gain a proper perspective and ability to help lead the DAS business and provide customers with fanatical support.
– Be on an on-call rotation with teammates to cover gaps in coverage.
– Design small complexity dedicated DAS configurations based on customer specific needs and deliver message to customer.
– Works with product on current service offering improvements.
– Stays current with emerging technologies related to respective technology domain.
– Capacity planning and performance analysis of DAS infrastructure as well as each DAS individually.
– Develops projects to improve performance, efficiency, experience, capacity, etc. of environments.
– Routine up keeping and cleaning of DAS Infrastructure.
Job Requirements
The ideal candidate will have:
– Intermediate working knowledge of DAS technology.
– Intermediate understanding of SAN, DAS and NAS technologies.
– Intermediate working knowledge of how the following applications work with the OS layer at a very high-level: VMWare, SQL 2003 and 2008, Oracle, Microsoft Exchange 2003 and 2008.
– Excellent server operating systems and server hardware knowledge required (Windows or Linux).
– ESX knowledge a plus.
– Excellent network administration skills required, and intermediate knowledge in DAS administration.
– Experience with Dell or LSI DAS ideal.
– Fundamental conceptual or working knowledge of SAN (Fiber Channel and ISCSI) and NAS technology.
– Intermediate experience pre-planning, forecasting, testing and validating design work.
– Intermediate conceptual or working knowledge of how the following applications work with the OS layer: VMWare, SQL 2003 and 2008, Oracle, Microsoft Exchange 2003 and 2008.
– Intermediate knowledge of storage best practices for VMWare, SQL 2003 and 2008, Oracle, Filesystem, Microsoft Exchange 2003 and 2008, and current Windows and Linux operation systems.
– Intermediate technical knowledge in technology methodologies, design, and implementation.
– Aware of business issues as they impact overall project plans, and able to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
– Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
– Able to resolve problems in a timely manner, and able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
– Intermediate knowledge of filesystem best practices for Windows, Linux, and ESX.
– Must exhibit strong communications skills, both written and oral.
– Must be able to lead a small to medium projects from beginning to end.
– Must have an basic understanding of how Managed Storage operates including DAS, SAN, and NAS Engineers, and Storage Architects.
– Must have a basic overall understanding of other positions within Rackspace that the DAS team interacts with including Sales, Solution Engineers, Account Managers, all 4 Support Segments, Network Security, and Product.
– Must have a proactive attitude improving their team and being a self starter.
– Ability to make appropriate decisions considering the relative costs and benefits of potential actions.
– Ability to successfully work and promote inclusiveness in small groups.
– HS Diploma required; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
– Requires 4 years of information systems experience and system administration experience indicating a basic understanding of Storage technology.
– Minimum of 2 years Windows or Linux system administration experience and 4 years experience in a customer service oriented position which includes at least 9 months of experience in a leadership role.
– Must exhibit a fanatical customer service attitude.
– Demonstrated ability to consistently provide FANATICAL support.
