As reported by Deadline, Dope director Rick Famuyiwa will be writing, producing, and directing a movie about hackers. With the world still hyped on Mr. Robot from over the summer and the Sony hack a distant memory, this seems like a pretty good time for a studio to jump on this big “hacking” craze that computer geeks have been talking about for the last 30 or so years. Famuyiwa’s film reportedly revolves around a kid from the projects of New York who “finds a reprieve from his his tumultuous life in the world of the dark web.” Thanks to his hacking skils (or “skillz,” in the hacker parlance), he “makes a name for himself among his peers and the federal authorities.” That last bit is a reference to the fact that this isn’t just any hacker kid, as this hacker kid is actually “the founder of a notorious hacker group.” As we said before, Mr. Robot was pretty popular this summer. Plus, there are only so many stories that can be told about hackers, and The Matrix and War Gameshave already been done.
