Police in El Dorado have arrested about a dozen people and broken up an identity theft ring in which more than a half-million dollars was purportedly stolen from the government through fraudulent tax returns.
Some of those returns used the names of state prisoners. Police on Tuesday served a batch of arrest and search warrants that centered on more than 100 fraudulent income tax returns.
The El Dorado News-Times reports that the Internal Revenue Service and the Secret Service took part in the weeks-long investigation.
Some of the refunds were sent to area bank accounts and some were mailed to local addresses.
One of those arrested, 31-year-old Shawn D. Carey, faces 65 counts of forgery, theft by deception and financial identity fraud. It wasn’t clear whether Carey has an attorney.
