KEARNEY — A former Girl Scout leader has been sent to prison for
sexually assaulting a girl in his former troop.
Daniel S. Miller, 33, of Kearney was sentenced to three to six
years in prison for felony sexual assault of a child Friday in
Buffalo County District Court. Judge John Icenogle gave him 136
days credit for time already served in jail.
With good time, Miller could be eligible for parole in 1½ years
and possibly be discharged in three years.
Miller earlier pleaded no contest to the charge in exchange for
the dismissal of a felony charge of enticement by electronic
device.
In February, a woman reported the 14-year-old girl had been
sexually assaulted. The girl was interviewed and told police during
a December 2010 hunting trip with Miller the two started kissing,
and Miller later sexually assaulted her.
The girl told police she had gone hunting three or four other
times with Miller and the two had kissed and Miller had touched her
breasts. Miller and the girl each also took pictures of their
genitals and sent them to each other’s cell phones.
During an interview with police, Miller said he was an assistant
leader for the girl’s Girl Scout troop, which included his daughter
as a member. Miller and the victim had exchanged text messages and
corresponded via cell phone and Facebook.
After interviewing Miller, deputies determined the location near
the Quonset where the girl was sexually assaulted was north of the
village of Miller in Buffalo County.
Miller is no longer a Girl Scout leader.
Miller was taken into custody after Friday’s sentencing
hearing.
