On August 1, 2014, the anticipated film Get on Up featuring Chadwick Boseman will hit theaters nationwide. The film spotlights the Godfather of Soul, James Brown, revealing his life from extreme poverty to how he became one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. Brown is considered one of the founders of funk who’s career spanned over six decades. In that time, he influenced the development of various new genres of music.
The film showcases how music changed Brown’s life by sharing his personal journey. At a very young age, Brown struggled to understand life and his purpose after his mother abandoned him and he was forced to live with his aunt. Brown inspired to sing an early age, but opportunities were limited. The film attempts to stay true to James Brown’s real life story by simply stating, “He broke the rules. He broke barriers. He shook the world.” Brown was no ordinary artist and this biopic will show the new generation how soul music was developed and influenced to create the sounds we hear today.
There is currently a Get on Up tour traveling throughout the United States this summer in anticipation of the film’s August release. The tour began on June 20, 2014, in New York City and will return to New York once again on July 18th. It will give people the opportunity to not only “jam out” to Brown’s music, but to also learn about his legacy.
Get On Up hits theaters nationwide on August 1st. Be sure to check out this amazing biopic about the life and career of James Brown.
