Noted author and civil rights activist, Angela Davis, will be this year’s keynote speaker at Kennesaw State University’s (KSU) Martin Luther King Jr. Day observance on Jan. 18th.
KSU’s annual MLK observance brings renowned speakers to campus each year and provides opportunities for students and community members to perform service to celebrate the national holiday in honor of the devoted civil rights leader.
Davis is the Distinguished Professor Emerita of History of Consciousness and Feminist Studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz, where she taught for 15 years. She is the author of nine books and has researched issues related to race, gender and imprisonment.
Her most recent book, “The Meaning of Freedom and Other Difficult Dialogues,” draws upon her experiences in the early 1970s when she spent 18 months in jail and on trial, after being placed on the FBI’s “Ten Most Wanted” list for her alleged role in a California courthouse killing, a crime for which she was acquitted in 1972. Davis will sign copies of her latest book following the event.
The 2015 celebration, which is sponsored by the Kennesaw State African-American Student Alliance, is free and open to the public.
The tribute begins at 6:00 p.m. in the Dr. Bobbie Bailey and Family Performing Arts Center, 488 Prillaman Way Kennesaw, Georgia 30144.
