King of Calypso:Harry Belafonte

Harry-BelafonteHarry Belafonte, better known as the “King of Calypso”, was born in New York City on March 1, 1927.  His career blossomed as an entertainer on Broadway and as a composer, collecting up to six Gold Records. Belefonte also became a producer for his own television show. In addition to being an entertainer, he was a civil rights activist who shared his political thoughts openly with the public.

Belafonte has won a series of awards ranging from a Tony award in 1953, to an Emmy award in 1960 for his variety show, ‘Tonight with Belafonte.’ His Emmy achievement is revered to this day because Belafonte is the first African American producer to win an Emmy award.
