He was one of the first arrested for alleged phone hacking at News of the World, and now private investigator Glenn Mulclaire has become the 20th. The BBC reports he was arrested at 7 a.m. London time for “phone hacking and perverting the course of justice” as part of the massive police investigation into illegal reporting practices at the now-defunct Rupert Murdoch-owned newspaper. Of the 20 arrested, Mulclaire is a special case because he can be said to have started it all. Long before News of the World closed and Murdoch appeared before a parliamentary panel for questioning over the summer, Mulclaire did time for intercepting voicemails as an investigator working for the paper. From the BBC: “Mr Mulcaire was jailed for six months in January 2007 after admitting intercepting voicemails on phones belonging to aides of the Royal Family, including messages left by Prince William. He was also convicted of intercepting messages of public figures including publicist Max Clifford, Lib Dem MP Simon Hughes and the model, Elle MacPherson.” According to The Guardian, “he is one of few to be arrested in connection with perverting the course of justice,” a charge that can result in a life sentence in prison at maximum.
