ST. PAUL, Minn. — A 21-year-old man from Maplewood was charged Tuesday in connection with a burglary that led to the assault of a Roseville Police dog. Additionally, two other suspects were charged Tuesday in Ramsey County District Court.
Roel Joseph Perez, Jr. was charged with one count of Possession of Burglary or Theft Tools, one count of Attempted Theft and one count of Killing or Harming a Public Safety Dog.
In addition, Ryan McNeil Dorner, 23 of Mahtomedi, was charged with one count of Possession of Burglary or Theft Tools and one count of Attempted Theft.
James Ricky McBain, 20 of Maplewood, was also charged with one count of Possession of Burglary or Theft Tools and one count of Attempted Theft.
According to a criminal complaint, Maplewood Police were called at 5 a.m. on Nov. 12 to a report of an alarm inside a fenced area at Truck Utilities, a company located in the 2300 block of English St.
When officers arrived, they noticed a hole had been cut in the entrance gate to allow the suspects to enter the yard. Soon after, an officer saw two males running from the scene. The men, Dorner and McBain, were both arrested, the complaint states.
Shortly after, officers heard the Roseville canine, known as “Major,” yelping and making high-pitched whining and crying noises. Officers approached the dog and saw that he had multiple stab wounds. A third suspect, Perez, was identified and arrested, according to the complaint.
The next day, officers found a knife with blood on the blade within several feet of the location where Perez was arrested. The dog had been holding onto Perez by his left calf.
Later on, police located Perez’s car, and a search uncovered the three ID’s of the suspects as well as a methamphetamine pipe and burglary tools described as bolt cutters, a sledge hammer, crow bar and large prying tool.
The complaint states the three men admitted to stealing parts from trucks at the company to support their methamphetamine addiction. Perez also admitted to stabbing “Major,” not knowing he was a police dog, and threw the knife on the ground.
“Major” suffered three stab wounds, two to the head and one to the chest, and suffered from a collapsed lung and damage to vertebrae.
The University of Minnesota Veterinary Medical Center issued an online update with “Major’s” status Tuesday. It said the canine made “small, purposeful movements” in his hind legs over the weekend.
If convicted on all charges, Perez faces a maximum penalty of 6 1/2 years in prison and/or $13,000 in fines. Dorner faces a maximum penalty of 5 1/2 years in prison and/or $10,000 in fines, as does McBain.
