Microsoft readies PC Kinect support

Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer has said computers will support Microsoft’s motion capture device Kinect in the future.

“We’ll support [PC support] in a formal way, in the right time, and when we’ve got an announcement to make, we’ll make it,” Ballmer told BBC Click presenter Spencer Kelly at the Consumer Electronics Show on Friday.

There is already a burgeoning developer community around the Kinect device, even though Microsoft does not officially “condone the modification of its products“.

In November, a hacker was awarded $3,000 (£1,931) by hardware developers Adafruit Industries for successfully developing an open-source driver for the device using a Linux laptop.
