Muskegon County 14th Circuit Judge Timothy G. Hicks on Monday sentenced Brent Ron Wilkerson, 18, formerly of Muskegon Heights to serve 31/2 to 10 years in prison for assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, plus an additional, consecutive two years for using a firearm to commit the crime. Wilkerson, already a prison inmate on an earlier conviction, received credit for 14 months already served.

Wilkerson pleaded no contest to the charges Oct. 21 in a plea agreement, halting a jury trial on a higher charge of assault with intent to murder. An earlier jury had deadlocked on the attempted murder count March 4 but convicted Wilkerson of three weapons counts. He is serving various, shorter prison terms for those convictions, currently at Lakeland Correctional Facility in Coldwater, according to the Michigan Department of Corrections website.

The incident happened Aug. 31, 2009, at Glendale Street and Summit Avenue in Muskegon Heights. Police reports said Wilkerson and the victim, Ray Jackson Jr., had a prior dispute in which Jackson allegedly threatened Wilkerson.

Around 6 p.m., police said, Wilkerson pulled up in a vehicle in front of the terrace of a house where Jackson was and fired several shots with a handgun, one of which struck Jackson in the face, injuring his right eye.

Wilkerson turned himself in to police the next day.
