My (Black) America

american-flag-wavingWelcome to America—the land of the free, the home of the brave. A place where the “free” don’t look like me and the “brave” are those who want to destroy me.

The Land of the Free

You are “free” when you can drive to the store without being harassed, assaulted, or murdered by cops. You are free when you can pull into your driveway without someone thinking that you are a thief, but a resident. You are free when you are respected and are protected by the same laws as all other Americans.

We [Black Americans] are not free because we cannot roam the streets freely. We are not free because the same laws written to govern our country did not have us in mind.

The Home of the Brave

America depicts the “brave” are those who want to eliminate Blacks. They are displayed as heroes through mainstream media and are treated respectfully if they are captured. The brave are those who waive flags, which stand for oppression. The brave are those who burn crosses at churches and shoot worshippers during bible study. Why is it brave when insecure cowards are murdering what they feel is “competition.”

Brave should be those who built this country against their will and made the best out of an unfavorable situation. Brave are those Blacks who explored entrepreneurship and built successful businesses because they were not hired by whites. Brave are those who exposed the truth of the oppressors even though it could cost them their lives.

Oh America, I have not given up on you yet–as we have a lot of work to do. But sometimes it is difficult to love you.
