Job Description
The NAS Engineer is responsible for infrastructure tasks including provisioning dedicated NAS and ISCSI SAN, connectivity issues, hardware and software upgrades to NAS and ISCSI SAN devices as well as storage attached servers, proactive improvements and maintenance to dedicated NAS devices, day-to-day issues and audits, improving processes and procedures, mentoring storage admins and support teams. The NAS Engineer is also responsible for pre-sales solution design which includes requirements collection from solution engineers as well as the customer and designing a solution to meet the customer’s needs. Keeps informed of emerging technologies. Also responsible for the prioritization and management of the ticket queue, handle multiple projects involving various departments, and tasks assigned. Work with product team to design new NAS product offerings and advanced features on current offerings. Due to the 24X7 operations of the business, must be able to work a flexible work schedule, may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
Responsibilities:
– Works appropriate level tasks and tickets for high profile customers.
– Schedules and implements NAS and ISCSI SAN maintenances with customers.
– Works cross-functionally with various departments daily.
– Develops standards and policies for day to day operations.
– Helps find areas of opportunity for automation and efficiencies for day to day operations.
– Monitors and maintains all NAS infrastructure.
– Escalates technical issues to Level 3 NAS Engineers as necessary.
– Looks at the big picture to gain a proper perspective and ability to help lead the NAS business and provide customers with fanatical support.
– Works with vendors to resolve escalated hardware and software issues.
– Designs medium customized dedicated solutions as required and communicate those solutions to customers.
– Develops documentation to improve processes, procedures, efficiency, customer experience, etc. of environments and ensures team inclusion.
– Ensures completeness and compatibility of each NAS device on a case by case basis to support system stability and performance.
– Be on an on-call rotation with teammates to cover gaps in coverage.
– Stays current with emerging technologies related to respective technology domain.
– Capacity planning and performance analysis of NAS infrastructure as well as each NAS individually.
– Develops projects to improve performance, efficiency, experience, capacity, etc. of environments.
– Routine up keeping and cleaning of NAS Infrastructure.
Job Requirements
The ideal candidate will have the following:
– Intermediate understanding of DAS and SAN technologies.
– Strong working knowledge of how to physically and virtually install and configure various NetApp array models.
– Strong working knowledge of how the following applications work with the OS layer: VMWare, SQL 2003 and 2008, Oracle, Microsoft Exchange 2003 and 2008.
– Excellent server operating systems and server hardware knowledge required (Windows or Linux).
– ESX knowledge a plus.
– Intermediate network administration skills required, and strong knowledge in NAS/NetApp administration required.
– Strong understanding of how to physically and virtually install and configure various NetApp array models.
– Ability to gather customer specifications and requirements, design a solution, order gear, and implement the solution for medium–large enterprise customers.
– Intermediate working knowledge of SAN (Fiber Channel and ISCSI) and DAS technology.
– Intermediate working knowledge of how the following applications work with the OS layer: VMWare, SQL 2003 and 2008, Oracle, Microsoft Exchange 2003 and 2008.
– Good technical knowledge in technology methodologies.
– Able to resolve problems in a timely manner, and able to handle multiple tickets, customer prospects, projects, and tasks simultaneously.
– Intermediate knowledge of CIFS and NFS protocols and best practices for applying them on Windows, Linux, and ESX hosts. Experience with NAS replication within the same site as well as site to site replication.
– Experience with multi-tenant or hosting storage solutions preferred.
– Proven project management experience required.
– Must exhibit excellent communications skills, both written and oral.
– Must be able to lead small to medium projects from beginning to end.
– Must have a strong understanding of other positions within Rackspace that the DAS team interacts with including Sales, Solution Engineers, Account Managers, all 4 Support Segments, Network Security, Backbone and Product.
– Must have a proactive attitude improving their team and being a self starter.
– Ability to make appropriate decisions considering the relative costs and benefits of potential actions.
– Ability to successfully work and promote inclusiveness in small groups.
– HS Diploma required; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
– Requires 5 years of information systems experience and system administration experience indicating an intermediate understanding of Storage technology.
– Minimum 3 years of NetApp experience.
– Minimum 4 years Windows or Linux system administration experience and 4 years experience in a customer service oriented position which includes at least 1 year of experience in a leadership role.
– Must exhibit a fanatical customer service attitude.
– Demonstrated ability to consistently provide FANATICAL support.
