Mr Baird pledged to recruit an additional 310 officers, bringing the authorised strength number to 17,000. The Premier also said 250 of the officers would be trained as serious crime investigators. The Counter Terrorism and Special Tactics Command would get an additional 50 detectives, along with the Child Abuse Squad. While visiting the Mount Druitt Police Station in Sydney’s west today, Mr Baird also promised to invest $100 million over four years in new policing technology. “This package delivers more specialist police investigators to target the most serious offences and technology to make police work safer and quicker,” he said. The funds would go towards providing police with body-worn video cameras, tablet computers and mobile fingerprint scanners. Mr Baird’s government also promised a new police station for Mt Druitt. “This building is 40 years old and is in generally poor condition,” Police Minister Stuart Ayres said. “We’re committed to providing police with the state-of-the-art facilities they need to get on and do the job they do best.” However, Labor said the Premier’s promise on police numbers was a re-announcement of an earlier pledge.
