ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The Albuquerque Police Department launched a new page on the city’s website dedicated to bringing awareness to child abuse in the metro area.

The page offers resources for parents and guardians about human trafficking, internet crimes, social media and how to spot child abuse. It also offers ways for people to donate of volunteer.

“Within Bernalillo County, more than 14,000 reports of child abuse and neglect were made in 2019,” Rebecca Atkins, an APD spokeswoman, wrote in a news release announcing the program. “The Save Jane program which originated in Dallas, pays tribute to the children who have been abused and keeps their identities anonymous as Jane and John Doe.”

She said the initiative is a partnership between APD, United Way of Central New Mexico and the Albuquerque Family Advocacy Center. It plans to release a video every three weeks recognizing the lives of children who died from child abuse in Albuquerque.
