LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — A Greater Lafayette family is pushing for stronger laws against convicted child-predators. On Sunday evening they held a “Save Our Children” demonstration outside the Tippecanoe County Courthouse.

Organizer, and mother Ashley Dickenson says they’re fighting for a few things. They want to bring attention to human-trafficking in hopes of helping end it and they want local lawmakers to eliminate plea-bargains for convicted child rapists. They’re also fighting for Indiana lawmakers to consider extending the death penalty sentence to those who are convicted of child rape.

Dickenson wants their demonstration to get the attention of the County Prosecutor Pat Harrington and State Representative Jim Baird so they can look into the family’s demands.

“No child should ever have to suffer because of an adults decision and I don’t want it to happen to my kids, I don’t want it to happen to anyone’s kids and we need to let all the people who are willing to offend against children know not here,” said Dickenson.

She hopes the message sticks with drivers and those passing by as well.

“This is something that is psychologically and physically damaging to children and it can carry on into adulthood and we want to make sure that we can snuff it out when we have the chance and that’s why we have to start here, we have to start at the courts we have to start with our state representatives,” said Dickenson.

The family stood outside the courthouse with signs from 6 to 8 p.m. They’re hoping to host another one with more people.
The next demonstration has not yet been scheduled.
