What is The Pattern app?
The app has been around since at least May 2017, according to the App Store, but has suddenly burst into the mainstream and fans of astrology can’t get enough of it.
It’s a free app available to download from the App Store but is currently only available for iOS devices.
The description of the app says: “The Pattern is a social network that helps you better understand yourself and connect with others on a deeper level.
“Explore your Personal Pattern to gain insight about various sides of your personality.
“Your Timing offers an overview of what you’re going through at this moment in time.
“These cycles are personal to only you.
“Understanding these dynamics can help you to navigate the difficult times and take advantage of the positive opportunities that you might otherwise miss.”
It is unclear who is behind the app.
According to the Daily Dot, The Pattern’s privacy policy was updated on May 24, 2017, two days before the app launched.
Attempts to contact its creators went unanswered by the site.
How does The Pattern work?
Once the app has been downloaded users are asked to enter their name, gender as well as the exact time, date and place of birth.
Instead of the usual astrology mumbo jumbo it has user-friendly passages which can be easily understood.
Those passages are then divided into three sections – Foundation, Development and Relationships – these are then divided into subsections with up to six aspects of your personality.
There is also a social network aspect to the app where you can connect with friends and family.
The app also provides a summarised overview of those relationships.
The Pattern does passively and actively gather your data.
It says: “The Service is designed to create informational readings or profiles about you or other users, how two users interact, and what is happening to you and other users based on astrological positions.”
What did Channing Tatum say about the app?
Interest in the app soared after US actor Channing Tatum started tweeting about it to his 8.5million followers.
He said in a video post: “How do you know what you know about me Pattern?”
Then going on to ask the creators of the app to direct message him to give him an answer.
The star of Magic Mike, 39, then continued: “I don’t even know if anyone should know this stuff.
“I was just in therapy yesterday – and yeah, I’m in therapy, whatever, everybody should be in therapy – and I just get a notification on my phone this morning – whoops – pops up, and, using the exact words we were using in therapy… Is the phone listening? Are you listening through the phone?”
He later wrote: You know what, Pattern people, you should just call me. That’s what should happen right now. You should just DM me… If you know so much, you know how to DM me. I need answers right now.”

His posts about the app cause such a surge in people downloading the app, some speculated if he was getting paid by the app’s creators.
One wrote: “Are they paying you because I’m finding and downloading this right now.”
Another said: “You got a lot more people to download the pattern!”
