Postgame Quotes

Opening statement
“I would say I thought we executed offensively at times that ball didn’t seem to want to go in for a stretch. I thought we kind of settled for some threes there early in the in the first half but some of that was how they defended us. You know, we got to make some shots and open up the space. But good first game, we’ll take it.”

On what he was looking for in the first game
“I think you know, my biggest thing is our identity what we’ve been preaching since since I got the job here, you know of energy and togetherness. I want to see that against somebody else. For 30 days of practice going against each other every single day, you know, what was that going to look like, against somebody else? And I thought for the most part, we showed who we’re going to be, and I think we’ll be a tough defensive team. Keep the ball in front. We probably forced more turnovers than I expected today, but I thought we did a pretty solid job keeping the ball out of the paint. I mean, they’re big kid in her exhibition, that the kid from Chattanooga, had 25 against Kennesaw State. We held her to five. I thought we did a really good job on her so I think it’s gonna start on defense and offense is gonna be a work in progress.”

On starting out shooting three’s
“I don’t mind threes. That’s where I started with because I don’t want them to me. There were a lot of decent looks. I just want to go inside out to get things and you know, the game of basketball, you gotta be able to shoot it to get some of the layups and in the paint. We don’t have a back to the basket player per se. We’re trying to get Takia Davis to come along, but the rest of our posts aren’t really back to the basket. So you got to create space. Some of it starts with you gotta make some shots, but I wanted more inside out through stuff we work on everyday not just around the perimeter and take some of those.”

On the play of freshman Raven Thompson
“I think she’s got a chance to be really good. She’s a mismatch all over the court. Nothing for her. I’m trying to just get her to play every possession. You know, she came from high school where she played all the time and she’s coming here the games faster and I feel like she takes some plays off and so you probably see me over “come on Ray, I need you I need you!” because I think we can move her around and get some some mismatches on the perimeter in that short corner. I think she’s got chance to be a pretty darn good player for us.”

On the offensive rebounds
“Well, that’s that was a positive sign. I thought I thought in our in our closed scrimmage and even into we scrimmage the guys the week later, we looked like an NBA team. We shot it and everyone was sprinting back and I’m like, I’m pretty sure we practice three to the boards and one and a half back. And we’ve really really emphasized that this last week with our GAs and I thought we attacked the glass pretty hard at times.”
