WORCESTER — Police are investigating the fatal shooting of a 28-year-old man on Burncoat Street.
The victim was shot sometime before 8:40 a.m. Monday and rushed to a hospital. Police announced at midafternoon that he had succumbed to his injuries.
The shooting, at 480 Burncoat St., remains under investigation, with detectives spending much of the day at the single-family house.
There have been no reported arrests.
Schools in the area, including Quinsigamond Community College and Burncoat Street Preparatory School, were in lockdown for more than an hour after the shooting.
The college, on West Boylston Street, eventually announced that all daytime classes were canceled.
At midmorning, the lockdowns were called off and yellow police tape bordered the house.
“At this time, we do not believe there is a threat to the public,” police wrote on social media.
In an interview, a neighbor said his wife called police after she saw two suspicious people approach the house from the direction of the Church on Seven Hills at 475 Burncoat St.
The church is across the street from the house where the shooting occurred.
Soon after the men entered the house, there was a loud pop, the neighbor said.
