SAN MATEO, CA — A suspect in the alleged rape and beating of a woman in her 60s has been arrested, San Mateo Police Chief Ed Barberini said Tuesday afternoon in a news conference.

Alejandro Venegas Guevara, a 27-year-old transient, was arrested in Redwood City, where he has strong ties, Barberini said.

Police said the alleged assault occurred Wednesday at around 10:40 p.m. at 9th Avenue and S El Camino Real while the woman was waiting at a bus stop.

The 62-year-old alleged victim remains hospitalized with serious injuries, Barberini said.

Video surveillance footage taken from a restaurant near downtown San Mateo around the time the alleged incident occurred helped lead to Guevara’s arrest, Barberini said.

“This is a particularly brutal and savage crime, and not one we often see or will tolerate in our city,” Barberini said.

“Members of this department have worked tirelessly to identify this predator and bring resolution to this case.”

A GoFundMe drive has been established by the San Mateo County Police Officers Association in support of the alleged victim in this case, who police said is in dire need of financial assistance.

Guevara was arrested at around 2 p.m. on Tuesday and was in custody at the time of the press conference, Barberini said.
