Here are the top stories today in Miami:

1. A number of South Florida schools in Miami-Dade and Broward County were placed into lockdown on Tuesday after reports of “swatting” calls to police. The calls put schools on high alert and alarmed parents. Police said the calls were unfounded. (NBC Miami, CBS Miami)

2. An award-winning South Florida teacher, Carlos Montero, was arrested last week in Broward County after being accused of having sex with a 16-year-old boy who he met online in 2021 and was vacationing with in South Florida. The boy exposed the relationship after writing about it in a college entry essay. Police said the two exchanged graphic photos and videos for several months before the boy ended the communications. 3. The defense for Parkland school shooter Nicholas Cruz, who is facing the death penalty, asked the jury to spare his life on Tuesday afternoon as deliberations begin. Cruz is facing 17 first-degree murder charges in the incident. (WPLG Local 10)

4. University of Miami’s fraternity chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon has been shuttered after being accused of misogyny and laced drinks. The national board of the fraternity revoked the chapter’s charter on Friday. No charges have been filed. (NewsNation)

5. An investigation is underway in Miami Springs after a woman was reportedly assaulted near train tracks by the 75th street overpass. The condition of the woman is unclear as of Tuesday evening. (WPLG Local 10)

  • A South Florida officer with Hialeah Gardens Police has been fired and accused of fraud. The former officer is facing charges for credit card fraud and fraudulent use of identification. (WSVN)
  • Larkin Community Hospital has appointed Dr. Nicholas D. Torres as the new Chief Executive Officer of the hospital’s South Miami campus. Torres has been with Larkin for at least 10 years. (Miami’s Community News)
