Waverly became the first Nashville area high school football program to publicly announce that it has temporarily shut down because of COVID-19 protocols as it enters the season. The team’s Twitter account announced the shutdown saying it will lose its final two scrimmages but should be cleared to play Week 1.

“We are on a COVID shutdown,” the post said. “Please keep our team in your thoughts and prayers as the hard work need to be rewarded by playing games.”

Waverly coach Randall Bouldin confirmed the team had been temporarily shut down because of COVID-19 protocols.

Waverly is scheduled to open its season Aug. 20 at Camden.

Waverly went 10-3 last season, losing 42-7 to Class 2A champion Peabody in the state semifinals. The Tigers picked up a COVID-19 win over Fairview during the season and had two games canceled when it had to shut down because of COVID-19 protocols.
