Parsippany, NJ police charge Vernon, NJ man with theft for unpaid stays at local hotels

PARSIPPANY — A Sussex County man is accused of skipping the tab for multiple stays at four hotels in Parsippany and is suspected of additional fraud, police said.

Gregory DeBree, 33, of Vernon, allegedly used more than a dozen aliases during five stays at the Parsippany Hilton, Embassy Suites, Parsippany Sheraton and the Staybridge Suites Hotel last year, said Officer Earl Kinsey, a department spokesman.

Police said DeBree was caught by happenstance after he ran into the investigating officer at the Staybridge Suites on Dec. 21. Parsippany Detective Joseph Puso was questioning the front desk clerk about DeBree’s stay a month before when DeBree walked into the lobby and asked the clerk for a newspaper, Kinsey said.

“Detective Puso had a pretty good description of who the suspect was,” Kinsey said.

DeBree was arrested and charged with theft for unpaid stays at the Sheraton from March 4 to 6; the Embassy Suites from Nov. 16 to 18 and again on Dec. 5 to 6; the Hilton on Dec. 10 and at the Staybridge Suites on Nov. 18, Kinsey said. DeBree is being held at the Morris County jail in lieu of bail. Each charge carries a $2,500 cash bail with no 10 percent option. DeBree was also issued summonses for two additional thefts from the Embassy Suites for unknown services, Kinsey said.

Police said DeBree used the following aliases at the hotels: Gregory Depree, Gregory Daniels, Gregory Diehl, Gregory Jennings, Gregory Bobbe, Gregory Duvree, Greg Devree, Gregory Dolan, Erin Bobbe, Michael Colacucio, Craig Dupree, Kyle Lafferty and Brian Lafferty.

DeBree allegedly provided phony identification to hotel clerks and used credit cards issued in the names of the aliases that were declined. In some cases, he did not provide ID at all and was still able to obtain a room after signing his name, Kinsey said.

“He has so many aliases that he probably stayed in the hotels multiple times, even hotels in the area that aren’t listed,” Kinsey said. “We don’t know how many victims are still out there.”

Anyone with any information regarding other possible thefts that may be related to this case should contact Detective Puso at 973-263-4315.
