Race, the story of Olympic gold medalist, Jesse Owens is a powerful movie that will hit theaters on February 19th, 2016. The movie stars Stephan James as Mr. Owens, Jason Sudeikis as Larry Snyder, and a host of other note-worthy actors. This powerful drama centers around the triumphant life of Jesse Owens and his quest to achieve what no other man could dream at the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games, becoming the world’s greatest track and field athlete. This dream resulted in multiple Olympic gold medals and discredited the hateful ignorance of Aryan supremacist, Adolf Hitler. Owens, the son of a sharecropper and grandson of a slave, achieved what no other Olympian before him accomplished, becoming the first person ever to win four gold medals at one time in Olympic track history, a record that stood unbroken for 48 years.
Owens also had a fantastic high school track career and was sought after by dozens of colleges by his senior year. He chose the Ohio State University although the school had no track scholarships to offer at the time. He supported himself and his young wife, Ruth, with a variety of jobs such as night elevator operator, waiter, and gas attendant to name a few. All of this was completed in between practice and record setting on the field in intercollegiate competition.
Jesse Owens proved in Berlin that he was a dedicated individual who strived for excellence on and off the track. Young people had a hero they could look up to who endured brutal racist disregard, and the doubt of millions. The African-American community provided Mr. Owens with the strength and courage to dismantle the perceptions and hate of an entire nation. Race, is a genuine story of the greatest track athlete of all times.
