Today marks two years since the tragic death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. Martin was killed by George Zimmerman who fired at the unarmed teen in 2012. Zimmerman was acquitted of Martin’s murder.
Ebernezer Baptist Church will host a candlelight vigil to observe Trayvon Martin’s death at 6:30 p.m. followed by a 7:00 p.m. Town Hall Meeting to discuss the Stand Your Ground Law, current gun control issues in Georgia and how they affect our families.
Remembering and attending events such as this continues the fight for justice, not for only for Trayvon, but all young black men who have been victims of modern lynchings by the gun. The recent “buffoonery” displayed by Zimmerman is yet another injustice that we have had to witness. It is time for us to realize that the battle is not over and that this is a war that has been in combat since 1619 when the first slave ship came to American shores.
