San Miguel prison in Chile, where 81 prisoners died in fire, has seen a sad procession of relatives filing into a morgue to identify the remains of the loved ones.

The blaze occurred on Saturday, leaving 14 other people injured.

Officials have claimed that the fire at the prison, south of capital Santiago, was deliberately lit during a brawl between inmates.

The brawl broke out in one of the most crowded parts of the prison where understaffing had long been a problem.

The prison housed 1,960 inmates, nearly twice the 1,100 inmate capacity.

Because many victims are unrecognizable, DNA tests will have to be carried out.

Chilean President Sebastian Pinera has called for an independent investigation into the tragedy.
