Samsung Epic 4G Touch System Software Update Removes Carrier IQ

Sprint has begun sending out an update for the system software running on the Samsung Epic 4G Touch. Among some minor changes, this removes the Carrier IQ app that some critics have classified spyware.

Carrier IQ caused a big stir late last year. It was installed by some carriers and device makers as a way of troubleshooting smartphones but some users complained that it was violating their privacy. Sprint is in the process of removing it from all its handsets.

The other changes contained in the software update for the Epic 4G Touch are much more minor. According to the official changelog, EL29 includes the ability to dismiss multiple calendar alerts and the activation of a Commercial Alert System (CMAS).

A Typical OTA Update
Sprint is handling he EL29 upgrade in the same way that almost all Android OS updates are: it is sent out over the air to users in stages, so those with this smartphone will need to wait until they receive a notice on their phone before they can download and install it. Still, the carrier promises everyone will have access to it within 10 days.

Installation will take just a few minutes, but should be performed with at least a half charge and should never be interrupted.
