Jones, originally from Daytona Beach, Fl. was a junior chemistry major at (CAU) and was known for being well dressed. He was a natural born leader and led a life that involved giving back to his community. Jones was previously a member of the CAU football team and was a mentor to local elementary and middle school students.
On the night Jones was murdered, he was lured by a false advertisement posted on Craigslist in hopes to purchase an iPhone. The young men that robbed him of his Nike tennis shoes and left him to die in the front seat of his car are Jordan Baker, 18; Jonathan Myles, 19; and Kaylnn Ruthenberg, 21. All three men were charged with felony murder, armed robbery, and aggravated assault. The men who committed this heinous act didn’t think Mr. Jones’ life was worth more than a pair of shoes. Where is our value in human life as well as one another? We now have four lives that will forever be affected by this senseless act. Sadly, Jones’ life and legacy were cut short by this tragic event.
I challenge all of us to stand up for Mr. James Jones, Jr. and the many others like him who have died senselessly at the hand of another African-American. We are of value and we have to respect one another on a human level. #BlackLivesMatter
